Roundtable: Empowerment through Women's Football in the Global South - Experiences from Colombia, 16.10.23

The FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand shook up the global hierarchy. Teams from the Global South such as South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria and Jamaica reached the final round, the Philippines defeated New Zealand and Colombia only lost out to England in the quarter-finals.

In Colombia's case, this is no coincidence. In the South American country, women's football is growing strongly. The public in the cities admires and respects the national team, called "las superpoderosas". More and more players are making the leap to Europe and the USA. However, the sporting success is in contrast to the reality of the country, which is marked by violence, machismo, poverty and corrupt sports officials.

What potential does football have for the empowerment of women in the Global South? What has to change structurally so that football can become a force for social change and emancipation?

These aspects will be discussed with experts, activists and NGO representatives at a round table.
