The road to the national team's European Championship successes in 2017 and 2022 was a long and rocky one. Women have been playing football in Austria since at least 1923. In the interwar period, two championships were even held despite fierce resistance. After almost four decades of a break from football, the 1970s saw development start from scratch. Once again, women had to kick off against ridicule, malice and resistance. The semi-final appearance at the 2017 European Championships caused quite a stir, but the fight for recognition is far from over.

Birgit Riezinger has been working on women's football since 2011. Initially working for Der Standard, she has been a freelance journalist since 2018, including for ballesterer, and followed the 2017 and 2022 European Championships on the ground. In her book, which will be published in May, she traces the most important developments in women's football. On May 28, she will present "100 Years of Women's Football in Austria" at a Club 2×11 special.
