fairplay Camp in Carinthia - Report

20 young people from all over Austria took part in the first fairplay camp with educational and physical activities.

Under the motto "Sport meets education and integration", we organised the first fairplay camp from 17 to 20 August in Ferlach and the surrounding area. Youths and young adults between 16 and 20 years of age had the opportunity to participate in sports and to get to know the methods and contents of our educational programmes as well as the region.

At the fairplay camp, long-standing workshop leaders passed on their expertise and experience to the participating youths and young adults. The participants were thus also familiarised with the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and the concept of sport for sustainable development. Furthermore, they gained insight into the topics of anti-discrimination, social inclusion and human rights. The practical instruction of fair play methods and training exercises was just as important as a varied supporting programme.

In addition to the seminar room and accommodation, the group was also out and about. The participants enjoyed the Tscheppaschlucht gorge, the Bodental valley, the Ressnig lake, the summer cinema, the local football pitches, the ice rink and, of course, delicacies in the local restaurants. A highlight was the day spent together with the children of the DSG Ferlach exercise camp, where they were able to put what they had learned into practice. Many of the young people also stood on the ice rink for the first time during the camp.

"The camp was really fun and varied. I learned and saw so many new things and I'm looking forward to more activities with fairplay!" said Zahra, a participant.

The aim of the camp was to give the participants an insight into the work and training with children and young people and to integrate them in the long term into further educational offers of the fairplay initiative.

The camp was organised by the fairplay initiative at the VIDC within the framework of the Rebels of Change project funded by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA). Partners were the municipality of Ferlach, the football association (VdF) in the framework of the starcamps, and the football club DSG Ferlach.
