Save the date: „Taking a stand in sports — together against extremism“, 3.12.25

On December 3, 2025, fairplay prevention hosts an event on the fight against extremism in sports in the newly opened Sportarena Wien.

Wednesday, December 3, 2025
9:30 am - 4pm
Sport Arena Wien, Conference room
Stephanie-Endres-Straße 3, 1020 Vienna

Following the terrorist attack in Vienna on November 2, 2020, not only were laws tightened, but the federal government also allocated €8 million annually for the prevention of extremism, including in the field of sports. This led to the creation of the fairplay prevention project, a contact point for combating misanthropic ideologies, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media, and Sport (BMWKMS). On the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack in Vienna, the event highlights how the event at that time has given rise to a lasting social commitment to prevention, cohesion, and democratic values.

The fairplay prevention project event focuses on the opportunities offered by sport in prevention work. In recent years, the project has shown how clubs, associations, and training facilities can become important partners in the fight against extremism. Sport creates encounters, conveys values such as fairness, respect, and solidarity, and thus opens up spaces where exclusion and radicalization have no place.
This is particularly evident in work with young people: sport offers them guidance, a sense of belonging, and positive role models—crucial factors in preventing extremist ideologies. Educational opportunities, awareness training, and networking have helped sports structures to take a stand and actively oppose misanthropic tendencies.
The event will feature the presentation of the monitoring report on right-wing extremism in martial arts. It provides insights into current developments and networks and also shows how right-wing extremist ideologies can become entrenched in combat sports.
A discussion and question-and-answer session will provide an opportunity to look at the prevention of extremism in sport from different perspectives.
Finally, an outlook for the coming years will be provided: How can the measures that have been initiated be further developed? What potential does sport offer for anchoring democratic values in the long term? The event invites participants to jointly develop perspectives for sustainable prevention work.

Participation is free of charge. Registration until November 27, 2025 on our homepage here.
Event language will be German.
