Out4In city hike – Through the vineyards of Vienna

As part of the Erasmus+ project OUTdoor for INclusion, we got to know Vienna's viniculture better.

Our Out4In city hike began at the terminus of the U4 underground line in Heiligenstadt. We took the bus up to “Himmel”, where we started a wonderful, sunny Sunday at the Tree of Life Circle. The Tree of Life Circle is a special place of power with 40 trees based on the Celtic Tree of Life signs. Each tree stands for a date of birth and corresponding characteristic features. Classical music and interactive sound columns created a calm, almost meditative atmosphere.
Once the participants had found their personal tree, the group discussed the extent to which the character traits really matched their own personality. A perfect exercise to get to know each other better.

After lunch together in the Oktogon am Himmel, wine expert Caroline Derler took over the tour and we followed the route through the green heights of Vienna: Cobenzl, Kahlenberg and Nussberg - parts of the UNESCO Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. This route tells more than just nature - it conveys the history of Viennese wine, the coexistence of people and the environment and invites you to relax and reflect. Thanks to Caroline, we got to know the special features and cultural heritage of Viennese viticulture

Vienna's wine culture occupies a special position worldwide, as Vienna is the only capital city that has significant wine-growing areas within its city limits. Viticulture has a centuries-old tradition here and is deeply rooted in the city's identity. The typical Viennese wine taverns, the so-called Heurigen, are central places of social life and create a direct connection between winegrowers and guests. Viennese wine - especially the Gemischter Satz - stands for diversity, quality awareness, sustainability and the cultural heritage of the region.

The Out4In project, an Erasmus+ initiative, focuses on promoting diversity and inclusion through outdoor activities such as hiking and nature experiences. The main objective is to create an inclusive environment where migrant women discover the benefits of outdoor activities that foster connection to nature and strengthen cultural exchange. In addition, the project empowers refugee and migrant women by helping them develop important skills such as language skills, digital literacy and environmental awareness. By improving access to educational and outdoor activities, the initiative also creates opportunities for growth, promotes personal development and strengthens inclusion in the community.
