Martial arts have enjoyed great popularity for years and hold a particular fascination for young people. Sport can foster a sense of belonging and contribute to the teaching of values and personal development. However, media portrayals, the promotion of a cult of the body or toxic images of masculinity are deliberately exploited in anti-human and anti-democratic circles to recruit new members and prepare them for physical attacks and criminal offences.
Drawing on monitoring examples and the participants’ experiences, the potential and risks of martial arts will be examined, and the implications for working with young people will be discussed.
There are still a few places available.
