The history of the years of change in Germany is one of upheaval and unity, of new beginnings and decline – and this also applies to football. In his book, recently published by Werkstatt-Verlag, ballesterer editor Jan Mohnhaupt recounts a time when West Germany became world champions in 1990 and believed itself to be unbeatable, while in East Germany, adventurers and gamblers sensed a great opportunity. The euphoria of reunification was followed by disillusionment and rapid sell-offs, ecstasy was followed by agony, and the big clubs of the GDR fell quickly and deeply. The traces of these years are still visible today – and Austrian football also plays a not insignificant role in this drama. In this Club 2×11 special, a short reading from the book will be followed by a panel discussion between Jan Mohnhaupt and historian Marko Demantowsky from the University of Vienna – and a discussion with the audience.
