ANALYSIS: The legacy of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar

A turning point for human rights and sustainability in global sport?

At the end of our three-year project Our Game for Human Rights, which focused intensively on the FIFA Men's World Cup in Qatar in 2022, we interviewed several experts and activists again in mid-2024 and asked them what lessons could be learned from the debates surrounding human rights violations, how sustainable the political reforms in Qatar were, and what could be done differently in relation to future major sporting events.

You can read summaries of the interviews with Mustafa Qadri (Equidem), Deepika Thapaliya & Jason Nemerovski (Equidem), and Rasha Younes (HRW), as well as an outlook on the work of the fairplay Initiative in the coming years, here.

The initiative “Our Game for Human Rights” was significantly supported by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).
