Club 2x11 – Of beauties, unlucky birds and love of the game - women in football reporting, 20.6.22

In preparation for the Women's European Football Championship, the perception of female athletes in the media is discussed.

If the sports reporting of the Austrian media were to be understood as the famous mirror of society, the relationship between women and football would be in a bad way. Not only do we read, hear and see little of female players, coaches, referees and officials, but they are also repeatedly denied a respectful, professional presentation. In 2020, a study on gender balance in Austrian sports reporting came to the conclusion, among other things, that female athletes are sexualised eight times as often as their male colleagues and 13 times more likely to be affected by trivialisation.

What responsibility does traditional media bear for society's perception of female athletes? What would change if the women's quota of Austrian sports editors made it into double figures? What evaluations does the term "women's football" entail? And what on earth is a "female coach"? All this and more will be discussed by this Club 2x11 in the run-up to the European Championship in England.
