Capital and Counterrevolution - Framing the Arab Gulf States, 02.06.22

Global Dialogue at VIDC takes a look at the role the region plays in global capitalism on the occasion of the World Cup in Qatar.

At our institute VIDC, we are not the only ones dealing with the upcoming World Cup in Qatar (Our Game for Human Rights). Our colleagues from Global Dialogue also have an interesting event on the topic in June:

On the occasion of the World Cup in Qatar at the end of this year, we will take a look at the region with "Capital & Counterrevolution" and explore the question of what role states like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Qatar play in the financial architecture of global capitalism. Where do they invest and why? We look not only at the economic interconnectedness of the Arab Gulf states, but also at their political and military interventions in the regional uprisings and conflicts and question their motives. We take the brutal military intervention of Saudi Arabia and the UAE in Yemen, which is responsible for the humanitarian tragedy in the country, as a starting point for the question of how these regimes are supported regionally and internationally. How are capital and counterrevolution linked and what does this mean for social movements in the region?

With the revolts in the Arab world in 2011, the model of rule of countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Qatar was also fundamentally questioned. Their regional military interventions over the last decade have had the effect of burying the demands of protest movements for inclusive democracy as well as economic distributive justice. Through these interventions, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in particular are trying to impose a new regional dependency structure. As a result, the lines of conflict between Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the one hand, and Qatar on the other, have come to light.
